Anxiety, fear, and wild excitement battled each other as my thoughts raced— a rollercoaster of emotions to match the uneven terrain. We were driving up Aspen Mountain. We meaning the 18 people that had been loaded into a single pickup truck, all of us experiencing each rapid bump and turn together as we cruised to the top.

I was about to run off the side of a mountain and launch myself into the air with a paraglide. For the first time.

As soon as we reached our launch spot, my heart still racing, the pilots began to lay out their brightly colored paragliders. My pilot placed his first, meaning I would go first. I would jump off the mountain first.

When you’re afraid, sometimes it’s best to run and jump — literally.

“Go!” The pilot yelled and we went, running for 20 feet before take off.

We caught air. I sat back. I was paragliding. Flying. I took in the surroundings. The green pines rippling up the mountains for miles and miles. The fresh, brisk air. The calming wind. All previous nerves vanished. I was at peace.

Paragliding is a combination of adrenaline followed by pure euphoria. I completely fell in love with the experience. The Aspen Paragliding staff make their guests feel safe and secure the entire time, making it easy to sit back and enjoy the freedom of flying through the sky. After a fifteen minute descent, landing was smooth. Though as soon as I hit the ground, I felt compelled to unleash my inner child, my insides yelling, “Again! Again! Again!”

WHAT TO WEAR — It can get cold up in the mountains. Layer! Wear a wind proof outer shell and footwear with proper ankle support. Hiking boots are a good call. As the sky can get pretty bright up there, sunglasses are also recommended. All the safety gear, helmet, harness and whatnot, are provided by the company. Paragliding is an exhilarating experience, but caution must be taken! Be prepared so you can enjoy the experience without worry.

In Santorini, the sea is all aquamarine and the traditional Greek architecture is all white stone, but the sunsets are every color you could imagine. Birthed from a volcano millions of years ago, the Greek island of Santorini floats in the southern tip of the Aegean Sea. Volcanic activity has left the majestic island with black and red sand beaches and a mountainous terrain.  The terrain adds so much romance to the already charming, cosmopolitan island. The perfect location for romantic strolls, intimate outdoor dining, and smooth sailing!

THE HOTEL CANVASES OIA SUITES

White from the walls to the furniture, our suite at the Canvases in the village of Oia could be compared to fresh air — simple and clean and great for relaxing, deep breaths.

The suites are built right into the cliff side overlooking the Aegean Sea, where the buildings have stood since the 1600’s. Originally built as wineries, all the suites have been impeccably refurbished and decorated with much sophistication. The layout includes a King Size bed in the open plan bedroom, a spacious living room and the option of private jacuzzi and/or plunge pool.

The calming atmosphere definitely cools off even the driest of hot of summer days. As the temperature lingered in the high 80’s the majority of our stay, the pool became part of our daily routine. Nothing like a big umbrella and some smoothies to kill the heat!

Topping of our three night, four day stay, we stopped by the spa for a soothing massage. The massage rooms were indoor/outdoor with an incredible view of the sea. The ocean breeze added a whole other level of serenity to our relaxation, recharging us as we said our goodbyes to Santorini.

THE LAND

Santorini is the most famous of its neighboring islands for a reason. Apart from its magical landscape, Santorini is busting with bustling villages, a variety of unique shops and exquisite dining.

As we stayed in Oia, we spent most of our days perusing the maze of the cliffside town. Time flew browsing down cobblestone streets, stopping in almost every storefront we passed — clothing shops, souvenir shops, storefronts packed with paintings of Santorini, even fish spas! We let the fish nibble off and exfoliate our feet for a good ten minutes, before returning to our travels. Overall, the shops were great for strolling and window shopping, though I did walk away with two sun hats for some much needed sun protection, and a couple postcards to send out to my brothers.

Needless to say, all the walking certainly built up an appetite! By the end of the day we were always ready for some nourishment, which Oia had plenty to offer.

My favorite spot — Ambrosia. With two gorgeous terraces overlooking the sea and amazing Modern Greek Cuisine, Ambrosia found a special place in my heart and my stomach. Our first night in Santorini, we dined underneath the stars, which I highly recommend. It may have been the 20-hour flight from Los Angeles, but I was starving upon arrival at Ambrosia. I ordered a bread basket with homemade dips, a warm tomato soup, rocket salad with spinach, slices of parmesan and walnuts with a pomegranate dressing, and Tagliatelle with cherry tomatoes and shrimp to finish. I was definitely more than satisfied.

THE SEA

What’s an island with out the sea, and what better way to explore than an afternoon cruise?

We chartered a boat from Sunset Oia and spent the day sailing the Aegean Sea, lounging and admiring the soothing waters as well as the spectacular view of the island. We plugged in our own music and let the songs sway with us on the sea, visiting Santorini’s neighboring islands. The red sand beach most vividly stands out in my mind — the setting, the deep, alluring red against the aquamarine water, was more dream than reality.

The food, the shops, the cliffs, the suite, the stars and the sunset — Santorini was truly a picture-perfect fairytale getaway!

An Ocean Journey with Whale Sharks and WildAid

An Ocean Journey with Whale Sharks and WildAid 3729 1955 Keir Alexa

It is 5 a.m when I awake on Isla Mujeres, a tiny island off the coast of Cancun. I am on a WildAid Expedition with my boyfriend and his family. We board a 32-foot fishing boat at 6 a.m. and head two hours out to sea, searching for the world’s largest gathering of whale sharks. Every year, between 300-500 whale sharks congregate in this area around the full moon during the third week in July.

My adrenaline overwhelms me as the boat is surrounded by these beautiful sharks that are circling around the boat. They grow from 30-60 feet in length and weigh up to 30-40 tons. I should point out here that although I like to scuba dive, I am scared to death to jump into the water with just my mask and fins.

boats on the water - keir alexa travel blog

In order to protect the whale sharks, only three people are allowed in the water at a time.  Two groups of people go ahead of me, but I can feel my heart pounding in my chest as my turn gets closer and closer. Our guide is world-renowned photographer Jim Abernethy.

Jim looks deep into my eyes and says, “Keir, you have to trust me. You will be okay. Take deep breaths and remember: your suit is buoyant and so are you. Trust me. Now jump!”

In life, you’ll never regret what you did as much as what you didn’t do. I decide to trust him–and I jump into the water.

Jim is holding my hand and I feel safe as we swim…and suddenly,  I am eye to eye with my first whale shark! Thirty five feet long, light gray with white dappled spots, it is like swimming alongside a school bus.

I swim to the side to get out of the way, and as I turn, another whale shark, and another, and another… around 300 whales sharks, swimming quietly in the ocean.  All I can hear is the meditative sound of my breath through my snorkel, in and out, in and out.

The whole experience is hypnotic and humbling beyond words.  To be swimming alongside sharks that are so large they practically don’t even know you’re there helps you realize  just how important and connected all living things are. In the water, we see manta rays and sailfish in addition to all the sharks.

In the evenings back on Isla Mujeres, the WildAid team, teaches us about their preservation work. . . .

Wildaiddd

As well as provides us with delicious dinners every night.

Food

Some facts I learned while on this WildAid expedition, are that every year:

* 73 million Sharks are killed for shark fin soup

* 35,000 Elephants are killed for their ivory

* 150 Tigers are killed for their body parts

* In 2012, 660 rhinos were killed for their horns

The illegal wildlife trade is estimated to be worth over $10 billion (USD) per year and has drastically reduced many wildlife populations around the world. Many species, including sharks, tigers, rhinos, and elephants, have existed on our planet for millions of years and sit at the top of their food chains with no natural predators, except humans. The devastation caused by killing sharks is far greater than one could imagine. Sharks have helped maintain the balance of marine life in our oceans for the past 400 years. Research demonstrates that massive depletion of sharks is having cascading effects throughout our oceans. An estimated 1/3 of open-ocean shark species are currently threatened with extinction, with certain populations experiencing a 99% population decline.

Since 2000, WildAId’s Shark Conservation Program has successfully elevated the international profile of sharks and has highlighted the importance of global shark conservation, including achievement of finning legislation in the European Union, victories in key US states and UN resolution addressing shark finning problem. Their motto is “When the buying stops, the killing stops too!”.  You can learn more about this amazing organization and the important work they do at www.wildaid.org.

South Africa Meets South Beach

South Africa Meets South Beach 923 441 Keir Alexa

Three years ago my boyfriend, Bob, decided that he wanted to build a house in Miami, which is whole new kind of adventure for him. He asked for my help so I did a bunch of research, looking for the best architect for the project. My standards for this search were pretty high, and I scoured the web (and the world) to find the right fit.

Luckily, I found SAOTA, a distinguished and award winning firm based in Cape Town, South Africa. They build beautiful homes all over the world. As opposed to other firms who seek to copy contemporary trends, Saota works with their clients to create the vision that they truly want—a house that tells the story of the people who live there.

As you might have guessed, Bob and I love to travel! As we thought about it, the designs of the places we love most all have water as a main element, which is good for us, because the house will be built right on the water in South Beach. Places like the Setai Hotel in South Beach, The Bulgari Hotel in Bali, and One and Only in the Maldives all give us a feeling of beauty and serenity whenever we’re there, and that is how we want to feel at home, too.

So, feeling inspired by the work we saw from Saota, off we went to South Africa, to meet with the architects and bring this vision to life!

Meeting Stefan, Phillip, and Mark of Saota was a great experience. You can tell that they really “get” it. Watching the three of them collaborate with Bob on a vision, especially one as personal as a home, was great to be a part of.

Cape3

After looking at the beautiful homes and spaces that they have designed over the years, I realized that architecture is truly an art form like no other.  Their homes are like paintings that you can walk through. I could envision being inside one of their homes and the feelings it would bring out in me—what a thrill!

Here is what Bob’s Mac Daddy crib is going to look like in 19-21 months!!!

The Ultimate African Safari: Ulusaba

The Ultimate African Safari: Ulusaba 5760 3840 Keir Alexa

Ulusaba is a beautiful game preserve owned by Richard Branson, and seeing such an unspoiled place was a great reminder that the true lover of nature will “Take only pictures and leave only footprints.” If you want to see the “Big Five” animals of Africa (leopards, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and lions), you have to go very early in the morning or in the evening, because animals in South Africa have figured out that it’s way too hot to do anything during the day.

Ulusaba has two distinctively different lodges, including the Rock Lodge, which is perched high on a mountain that overlooks the vast landscape.

aerial-cliff-lodge-1_bluesky_RGB

And the Safari Lodge, which is built along the banks of a dry river. Connected by long wooden bridges, the rooms are built like tree houses so you can really get a sense that you are in the hub of the bush.

ulusaba-safarilodge-view-large

My boyfriend and I decided to stay in the Safari Lodge for four nights and three days, which for a junior Safaris like myself was just perfect. It was also perfect because we had fresh orange juice for our morning rides and champagne for our evening trips—I like the outdoors, but there’s no reason we can’t have some fun while we’re there, right? Meals were served at a long table, family style, so people from all over the world got to swap stories as we all ate together.

IMG_0190

It was an adventure every time we go into our open-air jeeps and headed out into the savannah. I liked having a checklist of the five top animals to spot; it felt like a scavenger hunt! Being on a whole other continent, especially one as so different as South Africa, is amazing because it lets you see just how truly different everything is. The trees are different, the bugs are different (and bigger!), even the air feels like it has a different quality.

The guides and animals trackers at the Safari Lodge were really fantastic as well. They answered any questions we had, and ensured our safety at all times, which is pretty important when you’re dealing with lions and leopards. Lions are a lot bigger when they are 15 feet away… and there’s no cage in between you and the king of the jungle!

Safari6

Our tracker was a total badass—he seemed to be one with the landscape and the animals. He barely talked to us, but he could read the landscape like it was a book. Thanks to him and our driver we got to see all of the “Big Five.”

OC3A1171

I felt very connected to the landscape and the animals. You hear about poaching and other problems that animals in Africa face, and it doesn’t seem real, but when you have been there and you get to see how mysterious and unique these animals are up close, you realize how important it is that they are preserved and respected. I love forming a deep connection with new places, and South Africa was magical and transformative for me—I cannot wait to go back!

During my trip I took over 1,400 photos… Here are some of my favorites:
